Book Report #1 Part 2

Today in class you received the second part of your book report. This is your illustration page. Remember that you must complete your illustration on the page that I gave you in class. Please do not make posters or other diagrams--I want to display these in the classroom, and it helps if they're all the same size!

The blank page looks something like this (Sorry it's such a horrible picture!):

Your job is to fill it with pictures and words that represent the plot of your story. You will not be able to fit every event of the story on this page. Pick the high points! Here is a sample I made using the movie version of Cinderella. You will notice that I cannot draw people, but I can draw other little objects. My artistic skills are limited, so don't worry if yours are too!

On Friday, September 5th your illustration is due along with your chart that has the written part of your book report.

Caution! Weekly Quizzes Ahead!

As I've been grading your weekly quizzes over the past three weeks I have noticed that many grades are falling. Make sure that you are studying for your Friday quizzes. As we begin to cover more and more material, those quizzes will begin to be more and more difficult. The goal of having one quiz every week is that one or two bad grades won't hurt you as much, but if you consistently earn a low grade on a weekly quiz it will hurt your overall average. I like our weekly quiz system because it helps me see whether or not you are mastering the week's content. Hopefully if your grade starts to slip you can get back on the right track!

Book Report #1 Instructions

For your first book report, you will be reading a novel, or a long work of fiction. You should have found your book at the library yesterday or picked one from home or our class library.

The project has two parts. The first part is the chart you received in class today. As you read, be sure to fill in the chart completely. Write in complete sentences and answer each question.

The second part is the illustrated plot diagram. Using the chart you have filled in, you will then illustrate the events of your story. You can use words, symbols, and pictures of your characters to fill in the chart. Because you are required to complete your illustration on the sheet I will give you, I am not handing out that worksheet until closer to the due date. I don't want you to lose your illustration page, so you will receive that handout on MONDAY, AUGUST 25.

So, to summarize: Between now and August 25th you should be reading and filling in your chart. You will receive the diagram on the 25th and will have until SEPTEMBER 5 to complete your book and your illustrations.

On September 5th I will collect your completed chart AND your illustration page. This will be a 150 point test grade.

Wednesday Update

This week has been a busy one so far. Here's what we've been doing and here's where we're headed by the end of the week!

Monday: We went over our Lesson 2 vocabulary words. They all have the root "AUDI" or "PHON"
We also learned about the elements of short stories. We read an interesting story called "The Dinner Party" by Mona Gardner.

Tuesday: We discussed the elements of plot in detail and put the animated film "Cinderella" on a plot diagram.

Today: We will be reading a short story entitled "The Bear Boy" and putting it on a plot diagram.

Thursday: We will go to the library where everyone should check out a novel for their first book report. I will give you the instructions for this report at a later time, but for now be sure that you always have your independent reading book in class.

Friday: Weekly Quiz #2
We will also learn how to write an objective summary. You will be finishing your rough draft over the weekend.
